Brussels (B), 23 May 2008

More than 80 representatives of around 50 regions from across Europe gathered yesterday and today for the Assembly of European Regions’ (AER) ‘Europe: So close yet so far?’ conference.

Hosted by the Hessen (D) regional representation in Brussels, the conference showcased regional best practices in communicating Europe to citizens. A discussion panel also explored the question of whether regional media is a bridge or blockade in communicating Europe. The keynote speaker was Commissioner for Regional Policy Danuta Hübner.

The conference concluded with workshops on three topics: engaging regional media on European issues, educating children and young people about Europe, and how Europe Direct can help communicate the Lisbon Treaty.

These three topics are also the categories for this year’s AER Communicating Europe Award, which was launched at the conference yesterday. The Award is open to all AER member regions in the wider Europe, and the winners will be announced at AER’s General Assembly in Tampere, Finland in November.
