Setting the scene
As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Maastricht Treaty and the 60th anniversary of the Rome Treaties, and the European Union steps up to set out a vision for the future of the Union at 27, AER and the City of Maastricht convened this debate among AER member regions to explore their vision and priorities for the future of Europe.
The debate took place in Maastricht on 29 November during the AER Autumn Bureau Meeting, in the frame of the “Europe Calling” initiative, a year-long programme of events organised by the Dutch province of Limburg and the city of Maastricht to mark the 25th anniversary of the Treaty of Maastricht.
Description of the action
The debate encouraged wider discussion on the developments and challenges facing Europe today and an exchange of views on the EU in the years ahead, the direction it should take and what it’s future should entail.
What are the main achievements and challenges of the European project and its economic, social and territorial cohesion efforts? What are the main challenges of the European project? Is the EU still fit for purpose? What is the future of regions in a reformed Union? These were some of the questions member regions explored in the panel debate.
Why is the action important for the regions?
Regions are key actors in European integration and vital for a democratic EU, close to its citizens. The ongoing political reflection on the future of Europe is, therefore, central for regional authorities and an important opportunity for them to contribute to a political and institutional reform that takes into account the regional and local levels of governance.
