The General Assembly is the highest authority of AER and convenes representatives of all its full members. The General Assembly charges the Executive Board to implement its decisions. All procedures on elections are overseen by the Election Committee.

At the AER General Assembly 2026 on 3 June in Timișoara, Timiș County, Romania, the following positions are up for election:

1 Vice-President

A by-election will be held for one vacancy (Vice-President) on the AER Executive Board. The Executive Board prepares the work and all the decisions of the General Assembly. It is responsible for the management of the AER and charges the Secretary General to implement its decisions. Between assemblies, it is the highest authority of AER.

The Executive Board is comprised of the AER President, AER Treasurer, and between 7 and 12 AER Vice-Presidents, with portfolios and assignments defined by the Board.

Vice-Presidents have a mandate of two years and may be re-elected three times.

1 member of the Monitoring and Evaluation Group (MEG)

An election will be held for one vacant position in the AER Monitoring and Evaluation Group (MEG). The Monitoring and Evaluation Group (MEG) is responsible for:

  • Monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the mission and objectives of AER, in compliance with the provisions of the Statutes and the Procedures;
  • The efficient and sound use of financial and human resources.

The positions in the Monitoring and Evaluation Group have a mandate of three years and may be re-elected twice. Current members are Thomas Hartman (Västerbotten,SE), Chair of the MEG, and Vyacheslav Berezhnyy (Kryvyi Rih, UA).

2-4 members of the AER Election Committee

The AER Election Committee will inventory and prepare for the elections at the General Assembly by

  • identifying the status of the members holding the current positions;
  • identifying the competences and, if any, the formal requirements associated with the positions;
  • surveying suitable candidates among the AER members;
  • calling for nominations in accordance with AER Procedures.

The Election Committee nominates candidates for the elections at the General Assembly.

The positions in the Election Committee have a two-year mandate and may be re-elected twice. Current members are Kenneth Backgård (Norrbotten, SE) and Nina Bjorby (Västerbotten, SE)

Deadline for nominations, 6 May 2026

Nominations for each position can be submitted by full members of the AER. The deadline for nominations is 6 May 2026. Nominations should include a CV and a Motivation Letter submitted by email to [email protected].

The nominees must hold a regional political mandate. They are also charged to appoint a Seconded Officer who will work towards all tasks linked to the delegate’s duties – speech writing, drafting answers to letters, drafting contributions to communications, preparing the logistics of trips, etc – in collaboration with the AER Secretariat.

Kenneth Backgård, Chair of the Election Committee
