AER @ COP21
Regions and cities are finally acknowledged for their true potential in mitigating climate change with the efforts that they have already deployed to reduce their energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The COP 21 last year was an important recognition of this reality with regions and cities invited to the negotiating tables. AER was proud to represent European regions in Paris with our rapporteur, Ms Eva Hallström (Värmland-SE) who stated, “Paris was a key milestone for safeguarding our planet, but the climate efforts will have to continue long after COP21. With the 44 states and regions already engaged in the Compact, it is very promising that Åsa Elisabeth Romson, Swedish Minister for the Environment has now brought Sweden on board. AER will ensure that regions continue to strive for better and stronger policies to reach these goals”.
On the occasion of the COP21, AER also co-organised a session with the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) and the National League of Cities (NLC) that brought together subnational leaders from Europe and the United States to share the opportunities and challenges of leading equitable and inclusive climate and clean energy policies that create vibrant cities and regions.
Panel speakers included:
Mayor Ralph Becker, Salt Lake City, Utah; Former President, National League of Cities
Mayor Kasim Reed (MMF ’00), Atlanta, Georgia
Dr. Hande Özsan Bozatli, President, Assembly of European Regions
President of Assembly of European Regions Member Region (TBC)
Clarence Anthony, Executive Director, National League of Cities, USA
About the Compact of States and Regions
To follow-up on the Paris Agreement, AER supports the Compact of States and Regions in an effort to provide a transparent, global picture of actions to tackle climate change – allowing state and regional governments to measure their emissions and set ambitious reduction goals. The Compact of States and Regions is the first dedicated global reporting mechanism for states, provinces and regions to showcase and analyze their climate efforts. In less than one year, the Compact of States and Regions has become the global go-to platform for states, provinces and regions to measure and manage their emissions. At the end of 2015, 44 governments had reported to the Compact, representing more than 325 million people, one eighth of the global economy (US$10.5 trillion) and emissions savings equivalent to China’s annual emissions by 2030.
