In the framework of the Blue Growth Strategy, the EC aims at developing marine and
maritime economic activities. Non-coastal regions can also be concerned, for example
due to shipbuilding.

The ‘blue’ economy represents 5.4 million jobs and a gross added value of just under
€500 billion a year. The development of economic activities in the sea and on the
seashores can contribute to growth, especially through the creation of sustainable jobs.
