AER Task Force on Rural Development & Agriculture

Addressing the challenges facing rural regions and the opportunities which rural economies and communities can benefit from in the green and digital transition goes hand in hand with Europe’s ambition to make its economy more competitive, environmentally sustainable and inclusive.

The debate around the future EU common agricultural policy (CAP) post-2027 is also starting. The European Commission is set to open the discussions at the EU Agricultural Outlook Conference in December 2023 which will be followed by a public consultation on the upcoming CAP proposal in the first quarter of 2024, culminating in the release of a legislative proposal in July 2025.

It is therefore crucial that AER members engage in these discussions and collaborate on advocacy on the way forward for a future rural development and agricultural policy that better meet regions’ needs, including how EU funding instruments can be better designed and implemented locally to build thriving rural areas and help food and farming deliver better outcomes for the European economy, environment and society.

AER Task Force on Decarbonisation

The discourse surrounding decarbonization is gaining momentum. Europe’s commitment to combating climate change, promoting sustainable development and securing an environmentally friendly future for its citizens translates into ambitious targets for establishing a low-carbon and resilient economy. While the EU formulates ambitious climate objectives on the supranational stage, it is often at the regional and local levels where some of the most impactful actions are conducted. The collaboration with local and regional authorities is crucial in pushing the EU’s decarbonization agenda forward and ensuring that the advantages of decarbonization are experienced at the grassroots level.

The AER Task Force will delve into the EU’s strategic approach to decarbonization, its key policies, initiatives and future legislation on mitigating the impacts of climate change and securing access to critical raw materials indispensable for the green transition.
