In 2012, Beat Vonlanthen, State Councillor of the Fribourg Canton (CH), proposed to AER members to participate in the IDeal Index project, which aims to establish a new progress indicator at regional level. This new system of measurement should reflect the real progress of a given region—including sustainable development issues. This new indicator was first calculated for a number of “pilot” regions, with the final goal of making it available to all AER member regions. 12 regions participated in this pilot phase and the workshop held in Fribourg on 13 March 2013 aimed at gathering them to discuss the methodology and the first outcomes. On the following day, the participants had the opportunity to attend the Swiss Eco Leaders Day, where the IDeal index was presented in the context of a round table.
