Institutional affairs

Thematic issues

The precidency institutional affairs aims at promoting the principle of subsidiarity and the development of regional democracy throughout Europe. It ensures that European governance mechanisms provide the optimal framework conditions for regional democracy in Europe and focusing on European decentralisation processes on regional level and monitoring regional elections. Promoting the principle of subsidiarity is key to the institutional affairs presidency as it is to the AER in general.

Priorities

  • Pursuing the AER study on “The place of Regions in 2015 – A state of play of subsidiarity and multilevel governance in Europe”
  • Enhancing the visibility of AER as a resource centre on regionalism

Institutional relations

AER holds strong and steady relations with the European institutions and their representatives. We are bringing region’s expertise and needs together, formulating them and ensuring that this information gets to the right people, at the right time, with the right arguments. This work is essential to advocate and represent regional interests at European level, and to provide timely and useful information to our members so that they can actively engage in European decision-making.
Incidentally, the AER Secretariat arranges high level meetings for its members in Brussels and Strasbourg, organises events, showcases and promotes the interests of the regions and explains them to European decision-makers. Thanks to well established institutional channels, though position papers and joint events, we make use of collective actions to ensure a stronger alliance promoting AER member’s interest.
