About the session
In the 2015 Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review (QDDR), U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry explained that expanding action and partnerships to include state and local leaders is critical to climate and clean energy diplomacy. They are critical partners to developing innovative solutions to mitigate climate change and build more resilient communities.
Regions in Europe are in a key position to lead the efforts to develop sustainable growth models. In anticipation of COP21, many regions have already developed short- and long-term action plans, some of which seek to exceed the goals of the European Commission’s energy-climate package. With such inclusive and innovative regional approaches, it is imperative that these efforts be closely coordinated with the federal climate dialogue.
The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF), in partnership with the National League of Cities (NLC) and the Assembly of European Regions (AER), will facilitate a session that brings together subnational leaders from Europe and the United States to share the opportunities and challenges of leading equitable and inclusive climate and clean energy policies that create vibrant cities and regions.
While the effects of climate change are being felt at the local and regional level, today’s U.S. and European cities need to act on a local, regional, national, transatlantic, and global stage. The comfort and fluency of local and regional leaders engaging in global climate issues is more critical now than ever before. This session provides a unique opportunity for leaders to connect this policy action discussion across geographic regions, sectors and levels of government.
The session will screen a trailer of Catching the Sun by Shalini Kantayya, a documentary exploring the international race to build a clean energy economy.
