Following on the AER Open Doors week, the King’s Commissioner, Leen Verbeek and the Executive Board of the Province of Flevoland (NL) came to discuss the next steps of their engagement in AER. AER has been very present in disseminating information from Flevoland’s European projects, including Smart Europe, More4NRG and Regions4GreenGrowth. In addition to dissemination, AER also shared its own “peer review” methodology for the implementation of the projects. Finally, Flevoland will look into increasing their political involvement in the organisation as they are already very active in the hands on exchange of experience.

Regions on their way to integrated e-care
The dynamic of the SmartCare project is quite unique in that it brings together regions with very different profiles: while a first group of regions is deploying integrated e-care services, a second group of regions is using the tools and experiences developped in the project to prepare for future deployment. This second group is open for any AER member region and is therefore constantly growing. Aimed at providing partners with concrete added value, the SmartCare General Assembly on 17-18th June in Belgrade (RS) featured a series of workshops on cost-benefits analysis, legal and etical aspects, the collaboration with suppliers, enrolment, skills education and training, and stakeholders and management support.

Promote your inclusive education and/or ICT projects
Zero Project launches call for nominations on Inclusive education and/or ICTs
Education is the fundamental process by which societies transmit their accumulated information and knowledge, in which Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) play an increasingly important role.
Hence, the Zero Project 2016 is focusing on Inclusive education and/or ICTs, and our call for nominating innovative practices and policies has just been launched!
Any type of inclusive education project or policy can be nominated, from any field of education (formal, non-formal and informal) and any level of education (early childhood care and education; primary, secondary and tertiary education; vocational training; adult education and lifelong learning), including those innovations that facilitate the transition from segregation and integration to inclusion.
As well, any possible type of ICT can be nominated, such as: apps, software, websites and the internet in general, computers, telephony, ATMs, maps, television, voting machines, electronic kiosks, public displays, or consumer devices with digital interfaces.
You know about an outstanding practice or policy? Nominate it!
Submitting a nomination is easy: Read the instructions, complete the nomination form (available in other languages by June 26th) and then send the nomination form to: [email protected] by July 27, 2015 (23:59 CET).
Follow AER!Mutual learning, innovation and co-creation
After 2 years of a multistakeholders project gathering a very diverse consortium, what remains? The final conference of ENGAGED in Eindhoven (Noord Brabant, NL) aimed at looking into the legacy of the project. The visible outputs are a series of roadmaps, which set out milestones and a calendar to support the uptake of innovative solutions for active and healthy ageing in Europe. But beyond that, the project managed to bring together worlds which rarely meet. The mutual learning and co-creation process which followed is bound to last and this is the real legacy of ENGAGED.

First Multiplier event on preventing school dropout
16-17 December 2014, Barcelona (ES) – Following the kick-off meeting of the Erasmus+ project JET CD in Västernorrland in September 2014, the first multiplier event was organised by the region of Catalunya in December last year. 37 participants from the partner organisations and from different organisations from the region attended this event. The project partners had an opportunity to discuss with the stakeholders the activities and good practices that developed in the region. In addition to the theoretical aspects, the project members visited the “El Llindar” premises, an educational foundation which works in close collaboration with the regional authorities to develop practical solutions for combating dropouts.
The first intellectual outputs, the analysis report of each region, including the national and regional policy context, the overview of the compulsory educational system and some concrete actions to combat dropouts were presented and discussed during the meeting.
The JET CD project is carried out in simultaneously with the existing AER working group on ‘School Drop-Out’ which started its work in 2013. Both will benefit from and feed into each other’s expertise.

Innovation in integrated care: start now!
Some 80 people met in Kent (GB) for an ENGAGED workshop on 3 June 2014 on innovation in integrated care around the world. Two topics of the day: the integrated care approach and the impact that innovation hubs can have.
Members of the audience discussed assessment procedures, the patient experience and how people may need to be supported in learning to use technologies. Many issues highlighted are organisational, but – whatever the challenges – speakers were keen to advocate “start now!”. This is also why AER is engaged in both the SmartCare and the Engaged projects, which provide regional stakeholders with tools and more importantly, concrete support, to start the journey.
SmartCare General Assembly & CRB workshop: AER supports regions on the path of integrated e-care
At the 2014 eHealth Forum event, representatives from 22 European regions gathered in Athens (GR) for the Annual General Assembly of SmartCare, a CIP ICT-PSP project, with the objective of defining and deploying ICT-based integrated care pathways to facilitate the delivery of more efficient care to older European citizens.
As both project partner and manager of the SmartCare Committed Regions Board (CRB), AER organized within this framework a mutual-learning workshop to support regions in implementing of ICT-based integrated care services. Based on a peer review approach, the workshop encouraged participating regions to analyse their current care system characteristics and weaknesses, identify common obstacles and discuss potential solutions to improve the integration of care.
For a Smarter Europe
From 19 to 21 April, the SMART EUROPE INTERREG IVC project partners gathered in Manchester (UK) in order to exchange and discuss on how to build dynamic business environments and nourish open innovation. Led by Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), good practices from Avila (ES), Flevoland (NL) and Manchester (UK) were presented: the creation of clusters, the benefits of interregional cooperation, and the need for an integrated strategy on innovation were all put forward as ways to push for the creation of jobs in the innovation sector. Regions were also invited to use the MMU Action Learning technique to tackle issues related to the implementation of the recommendations of the Regional Peer Reviews hosted last year, in order to effectively improve policies in the employment sector.
Finally, the date of the project’s final conference was announced: join the Smart Europe Team in Flevoland (NL) on 3-4 November on the path to a Smarter Europe!
