SUMMER ACADEMY 2019: Zürich’s Youth for Debate!

Coinciding with the 2019 European Youth Capital, the region of Vojvodina (RS) will host the AER Summer Academy 2019 in the city of Novi Sad from the 1st to the 5th of July. This year’s edition entitled Youth is Future, Youth is Europe will be dedicated to reflecting on the Future of Europe from multiple angles and the role that young people can play in building a stronger Europe. The Canton of Zürich (CH) with the collaboration of the non-profit organisation Young Enterprise Switzerland (YES) will organise a workshop aimed at introducing the Swiss method of debating.

Youth for Debate!

Following the 1st Plenary Session of the Summer Academy entitled Youth is Democratic Participation and European Identity, the speakers from Young Enterprise Switzerland (YES) will present some basics for debating and for coherent argumentation, as well as giving all the participants the opportunity to put their debating skills into practice. The workshop Youth for Debate will take place on the 2nd of July from 14h to 15h.

Why debating matters in Switzerland?

Debating means presenting your argument in a coherent and concise way; although said like that may sound easy, the truth is that not everyone has the skills and attitude to do so, however, anyone can learn to debate.

This is becoming a prominent educational area in Switzerland, therefore a concrete method has been implemented in schools all around the country. Thanks to this methodology, kids can get acquainted from early stages with presenting and expressing their own opinions but, most importantly, respecting and listening to the other person’s opinion. Being able to debate allows kids to be more open-minded and tolerant while gaining a wider perspective on specific topics.

Young Enterprise Switzerland (YES), a Swiss independent organisation, decided to launch a Youth Debate programme, which consists of teaching students how to participate in debates on controversial topics, how to express correctly their opinion and defend their position while respecting the views of the opponents.

An insight into the debate technics imported from Zürich

On the occasion of the 2019 Summer Academy, representatives from YES will come to Novi Sad to run this workshop and help participants to build up their debating skills by learning some helpful technics used in the before-mentioned “Youth Debate” programme. During this workshop, the participants will be able to put their skills into practice and discuss in small groups the question “Should the age requirement to exercise the right to vote in European Elections be lowered to 16 in all countries?”

Either if you think that you have excellent debating skills, or think debating is not for you, you should give this workshop a try and learn the Swiss way of debating by the hand of Young Enterprise Switzerland (YES).

Meet the speakers!

This workshop will be led by six representatives from Young Enterprise Switzerland (YES) who will also represent the Canton of Zürich (CH). The young organisers are Cynthia Probst, Jannis Brombracher, Manuel Rölli, Michaël Steiner, Mégane Cotting, Cheryl Vaterlaus.

How to participate?

If you wish to participate in this workshop and in many other activities, please visit the event page of the Summer Academy and discover the full programme.
