SUMMARY:Partner Leadership Programme: 'Dúiche' - Capitalising on Culture\, Competing on Difference—Why and How Place Matters?
DESCRIPTION:What is “Dúiche”? \nThis Workshop is named Dúiche from the Irish word for native place\, derived from the root ‘dú’\, meaning earth or land. Dúiche emphasises a sense of belonging\, identity and responsibility\, and stresses the interconnectedness of place\, people\, culture\, language and the ecological balance between human and non-humans. \nThis Workshop at Irish College Leuven (BE) is designed to inspire\, and stimulate the development of internationally- competitive European enterprises rooted in unique places through the creation of ‘real value’. It is not a business or entrepreneurship ‘bootcamp’. Rather\, it is an integrated mix of reflective lectures\, discussions\, study visits\, guest speakers and hands-on case studies\, all designed to foster sustainable and innovative enterprises\, especially in marginal regions throughout Europe. \nBackground\nAt a time when national economies and societies are increasingly questioning the impact of\nthe homogenising forces of globalisation and the relative risks and rewards of complex\nglobal supply chains\, the ‘local’ matters more than ever. If anything\, the consequences of\nthe pandemic have only heightened interest in ‘place-based’ enterprises. \nThroughout Europe\, indigenous enterprises\, especially those characterised by a commitment to authenticity and possessed of an ecologically and socially sustainable mind- set\, offer a critical counterbalance to rootless multinationals. Sense of place\, distinctiveness\, identity\, the arts\, character\, culture and commerce are inextricably linked in ways that extend well beyond the ‘cultural industries.’ \nIn today’s experience economy\, meaning\, tradition\, authenticity\, culture\, language\, and sense of place are often key elements in attaining a competitive advantage by ‘scaling deeper’ – that is\, rooting sustained competitive advantage in distinctive and authentic (including intangible) local resources. \nDistinctive cultural and natural resources stimulate imagination\, creativity\, innovation and entrepreneurship while promoting shared value creation\, global citizenship\, ecological integrity and community regeneration. \nMajor Themes & Who Should Attend\nSome of the topics covered in the Workshop include: \n– Authenticity and Tradition\n– Place\, Sense of Place and Rootedness\n– Real Value\, Meaning and Purpose\n– Place-Based Enterprises and Transformative Experiences\n– Community Development and Cooperative Enterprises\n– Competitive Advantage of Distinctive Local Resources\n– Scaling Deeper \nThe workshop is ideal for: \nExecutives in development agencies and community development practitioners\,\npublic officials and policy makers engaged in supporting economic\, social\, and\ncultural development\, and supporting SMEs\, especially those located in marginal\nregions throughout the EU. \nEntrepreneurs\, social entrepreneurs\, potential entrepreneurs and business owners\,\nespecially those who might benefit from understanding more about place-based and\nsustainable ventures in sectors such as food\, tourism\, crafts\, renewables\, the\ncreative economy\, the green economy\, marine resources and the digital economy. \nCost of Workshop\nThe cost of the workshop is EUR 1\,750. You can purchase a ticket directly HERE. For any questions\, please contact reception@irishcollegeleuven.eu \nView the Brochure!\nDúiche Brochure \n

SUMMARY:1st AER-ENoP Forum on New Forms of Democratic Engagement
DESCRIPTION:How to actively involve citizens in policy development in order to regain political trust and add legitimacy to political decisions?\nOn 1-2 June 2022\, in Comet Meeting-Louise\, and Online\, the Assembly of European Regions (AER) and the European Network of Political Foundations (ENoP) will co-organise a Forum dedicated primarily to innovative and more participatory forms of democratic engagement. \nA new form of politics is gaining steam. Providing an alternative to traditional representative routes\, citizen assemblies and other forms of deliberative democracy try to help governments through discussing and developing recommendations on needed steps to safeguard a healthy and stable world. Practical examples on direct involvement of citizens in democratic processes enable an open discussion on particular policy challenges and giving recommendations to elected governments. Involved citizens are randomly selected to reflect the demographic diversity of the population. The process is typically facilitated by an independent and apolitical organisation\, which brings in experts across a wide range of disciplines\, as well as competing interest groups and the voices of those personally affected by the issue in question. Building up on this\, ENoP and AER are initiating a project that would capitalise on successful examples and good practices\, while at the same time discussing the full potential and future of such direct involvement of citizens in democratic processes. \nHow the project is built?\nThe first part of the project consists of a 1.5-day forum where different examples and experiences of citizen assemblies from different country contexts are presented\, aiming to: \n\nHelp the EU to formulate/design its deliberative policies/approaches in Europe and for its\ninternational cooperation programmes;\nHighlight the opportunities and challenges of direct involvement of citizens in democratic\nprocesses\, as well to allow for an exchange of lessons learned from different forms of deliberative\nprocesses ;\nDiscuss the options of relationship between those assemblies and representative\nbodies/governments and elaborate recommendations for different options of structured\nengagement of citizens in policy making (based on the experiences from the case studies).\n\nFollowing the forum\, a series of studies will be compiled\, based on the following criteria: \n\nThe good practice model has innovative elements\nThe good practice model has achieved and recorded concrete results\nThe achieved results are relevant to the people living in the region\, municipality\, commune\nThe good practice model is sustainable and replicable to other regions\, municipalities\, communes\n\nSpeakers Include\n\nMarcin Gerwin\, PhD\, Center for Blue Democracy\, Specialist in Deliberative Democracy and Sustainability\nToma Šutić\, Member of the Cabinet of Dubravka Šuica\, European Vice President for Democracy and Demography\nAleksandra Dulkiewicz\, Mayor of Gdansk\, Poland\nMathilde Bouyé\, Démocratie Ouverte & World Resources Institute – presenting the French Ctizens’ Convention on Climate\nProf. David Farrell\, The Irish Citizens’ Assembly Project\nKarl-Heinz Lambertz\, Rapporteur of Congress of Local Regional Authorities\, and President of German-speaking Community of Belgium\nLukas Mandl\, Member of the European Parliament; and Vice President for European Integration & Wider Europe\, Assembly of European Regions\n\nMore speakers are to be confirmed so stay tune! \n  \nCheck out the Programme HERE\nInterested in attending?\n \nContacts: \nAnna Comacchio\, Project and Policy Officer\, a.comacchio@aer.eu \nGisela Guari Cañada\, Institutional Relations & Advocacy Officer\, g.guari@aer.eu

Many\, if not all regions\, are working towards this in one form or another. \nA major pitfall exists in that it is easy to fall into when working towards the SDGs are so-called “cherry picking”\, i.e. selecting a few goals to focus on while neglecting others. However\, in doing so\, one might actually end up strengthening one goal\, but at the expense of others. Therefore\, the 17 SDGs must be viewed as a whole\, and it then becomes more clear that they are both interconnected and interdependent. \nOne of the main questions one might ask\, is this: How can a region ensure that they contribute toward the SDGs while at the same time ensuring economic growth? Is this possible\, or are they mutually exclusive? \n\nIt is therefore important that we have tools to help us analyse and monitor the trends towards the SDGs.\n \nThe goal of the seminar is to showcase the tools and best practice exciting to help regional governments to implement and monitor the SDGs.\n\nAgenda\n\n\nPresentations\nIf interested\, you can find below all the presentations which were given during the Breakfast Seminar: \n\n“How to build a new region in light of the SDGs?” Erik Lagethon\, Advisor Regional Development\, Oppland County Authority (NO)\n“A territorial approach to the SDGs” Stina Heikkila\, Policy Analyst OCDE\n“Implementing SDGs in regional planning – more than words?” Eva Hallström\, Regional Councillor Värmland (SE)\n“The SDGs in Flanders” Ine Baetens\, Expert Sustainable Development Flanders (BE)\n\nThe Seminar was filmed as well\, and you can find the video on the official Facebook page of the Oslo Region European Office.

SUMMARY:Urban Responses To Refugees: The Case of Gaziantep
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of Friends of Europe’s Migration Action initiative\, which examines the imperative of migration in the context of economic sustainability and demographics\, as well as its impact on public services\, communities and security. Friends of Europe’s approach is based on seeing migration and integration as assets rather than as threats. Changing the current narrative surrounding migration\, by emphasising the positive over the negative and presenting citizens with a realistic picture of migration\, is one of their key aims. Involving cities and municipalities\, private foundations\, national governments\, international institutions and more\, is key to ensuring a more horizontal and holistic approach. \nRefugee flows\, while not new\, have sent many systems into shock over the last several years\, creating tensions between states and their international obligations\, as well as between national and local governments. Indeed\, while cities are often able to demonstrate resilience on the surface\, issues of finance\, governance\, integration and urban planning are all linked to local systems which are being tested in ways for which they were not designed. The Turkish city of Gaziantep\, lying less than 100 km north of Aleppo\, is one such place. Despite the challenges of hosting such a large population of newcomers – of the 600\,000 Syrians in Gaziantep\, only 40\,000 live in refugee camps – local authorities have successfully employed innovative solutions in response\, including the creation of Turkey’s first municipal migration affairs unit in 2016. Sitting close to the source of so much human mobility\, what lessons can be learned from Gaziantep’s experiences? \n\nWhat are the conditions that lead certain cities to effectively respond to an influx of refugees\, while others fall into seeming chaos?\nHow have Turkish municipalities like Gaziantep improved their ability to host and support large numbers of refugees\, and what challenges have they faced along the way?\nWhat should the Turkish national government and the European Union do to ease pressures at the local level?\nWhat role has the private sector played in supporting refugees in Gaziantep and throughout Turkey?\n\nSpeakers include\nHande Bozatlı\, Honorary President of the Assembly of European Regions (AER)\nKati Piri\, Member of the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET)\nFatma Şahin\, Mayor of Gaziantep\, Turkey \nModerated by\nDharmendra Kanani\, Director of Strategy at Friends of Europe \nRegistration\n\nAmanda Rohde\, Programme Executive\nTel.: +32 2 893 98 11\nEmail: amanda.rohde@friendsofeurope.org

SUMMARY:An alternative for the future: Silver Economy for cities and regions
DESCRIPTION:Europe is ageing. Today’s responsibility is to find sustainable solutions to this that lead to opportunities for economic growth and jobs. \nWhat does Silver economy mean and why is it important?\nThe European Silver Economy is the part of the economy that concerns Europe’s older citizens and is closely linked to current trends in Europe’s demographics\, the effects on older adults’ quality of life. It includes all the economic activities relevant to the needs of older adults\, and the impact on many sectors. \nAn ageing society should be considered a sign of social and economic progress because of increasing longevity\, brings further opportunities for economic\, social and cultural development. Thus\, a strategic overview is essential to fully mitigate risks and exploit opportunities. \nDefining an evidence-based framework for the European Silver Economy strategy will ensure that Europe provides leadership in the following areas: Managing the impact of an ageing population\, responding to the societal challenge\, and boosting jobs and economic growth. \nWith the occasion of the European Week of Regions and Cities\, an annual Brussels-based four-day event AER will organise the workshop “An alternative for the future: Silver Economy for cities and regions”. \nThis workshop will take its participants through four inspiring examples of how a Silver Economy can help regions and cities to better match the needs of their ageing population while supporting local businesses and solution providers. It will be the opportunity to discuss the complementarity between these examples and the initiatives at EU level. The networking session that follows will bring together potential partners around issues related to the Silver Economy. \nThis will enable officials from regions and cities’ administrations\, as well as experts and academics to exchange good practices and know-how in the field of regional and urban development and to bring forward their regional expertise in this specific area. \nYou can register today by following this link! Look for the event code 10B41.\n
